Your coconut soy candle can burn for 30–50 hours — but only if you treat it right. A few simple habits make the difference between a candle that performs beautifully from start to finish and one that tunnels, smokes, or burns out too quickly. Here are 5 rules that will double the life of your candle.
Rule 1: The First Burn Is the Most Important
This is the single most important thing you can do for your candle, and most people skip it.
The first time you light your candle, let it burn until the melted wax pool reaches all the way to the edges of the jar. For an 8oz candle, this usually takes 2-3 hours. For a 4oz tin, about 1-2 hours.
Why this matters: Wax has "memory." If you blow out a candle before the wax melts to the edges, it will only melt to that same diameter every subsequent burn. This creates a tunnel down the center of the candle, wasting all the wax on the sides. Once tunneling starts, it's very difficult to fix.
With coconut soy wax specifically, this is even more important than with paraffin. Coconut soy has a lower melting point and softer texture, so it needs that full initial melt pool to set the pattern for future burns.
Rule 2: Trim the Wick Before Every Light
Before each use, trim your wick to about 1/4 inch (6mm). You can use a wick trimmer, nail clippers, or scissors.
Why this matters:
- Reduces soot: A long wick creates a larger flame that produces more carbon, leading to black smoke and soot on your jar
- Even burn: A properly trimmed wick produces a calm, steady flame that melts wax evenly
- Prevents mushrooming: The carbon buildup at the tip of an untrimmed wick (called a "mushroom") causes the flame to flicker and pop
- Extends burn time: A controlled flame burns wax more slowly, giving you more hours per candle
If you notice black soot on the inside of your jar, your wick is too long. Blow out the candle, let it cool, trim the wick, and relight.
Rule 3: Don't Burn for More Than 4 Hours at a Time
It's tempting to let a great-smelling candle burn all day, but burning for more than 4 hours causes problems:
- The wick can develop a large carbon mushroom
- The jar can overheat, which is a safety risk
- The wax pool gets too deep, which can drown the wick
- The fragrance can become overwhelming in an enclosed space
The sweet spot: Burn for 2-4 hours, then extinguish, let the wax solidify completely, trim the wick, and relight when you're ready. This cycle maximizes both scent throw and total burn time.
Rule 4: Keep It Away from Drafts
Avoid placing your candle near open windows, air vents, fans, or high-traffic doorways. Moving air causes the flame to flicker and dance, which might look pretty but creates several problems:
- Uneven burning: The flame pushes to one side, melting wax unevenly
- Faster consumption: A flickering flame burns through wax more quickly
- More soot: Inconsistent airflow increases carbon production
- Reduced scent throw: The fragrance disperses unevenly instead of filling the room
A still, calm flame is a healthy flame. If your candle is flickering constantly, move it to a more sheltered spot.
Rule 5: Know When to Stop
Stop burning your candle when about 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom. Burning below this level can overheat the jar and the surface it's sitting on.
With coconut soy wax, you can repurpose that last bit of wax: let it cool completely, pop it out, and place it in a wax warmer for a few more hours of fragrance. No waste.
Bonus Tips for Coconut Soy Candles Specifically
- White spots are normal: Coconut soy wax can sometimes develop white spots or a slightly rough surface. This is called "frosting" and is a natural characteristic of plant-based waxes. It doesn't affect performance at all — it's actually a sign that your candle is made with real natural wax
- Store in a cool, dark place: Essential oils are sensitive to heat and light. Keep unused candles away from direct sunlight to preserve the scent
- Use a candle snuffer: Blowing out a candle can push the wick off-center and splatter wax. A snuffer or lid (if your candle has one) extinguishes the flame cleanly
The Payoff
Follow these 5 rules and your coconut soy candle will reward you with 30–50 hours of clean, even, beautifully scented burning. That's weeks of enjoyment from a single candle — when you treat it right.
Our candles are available in 8oz jars and 4oz gold and silver tins, each hand-poured with coconut soy wax and pure essential oils.
